Selecting a specialized pharmacy company for your hemophilia/bleeding disorder needs is not a “one size fits all” decision. What works for one person, may not necessarily work for another. There is an abundance of choices, and, for many, especially new parents, the decision can be overwhelming. Hemophilia Foundation of Maryland is here to provide you with as much information as possible about the services provided by each specialized pharmacy company. In coordination with your medical provider we hope you are able to make the most educated choice that will best serve you and your family.

At the Hemophilia Foundation of Maryland, we understand the importance of patient choice when it comes to accessing medications for rare bleeding disorders. We advocate fiercely for your right to choose both the specialty pharmacy that best fits your needs and the treatment product that works best for you. However, we also recognize the challenges posed by insurance regulations, which can make this freedom of choice increasingly difficult. To support our community in navigating these challenges, we have compiled a list of specialty pharmacies that not only cater to bleeding disorder patients but also support the mission of HFM. These pharmacies prioritize patient care and accessibility, ensuring that you receive the support and services you deserve. We encourage you to explore these options and advocate for your right to choose the best possible care for your unique needs.

When evaluating a specialty pharmacy for your bleeding disorder needs, it’s crucial to ask the right questions to ensure you receive the best possible care. Here are some important inquiries to consider:

  1. Do you provide private in-home nursing? Having access to skilled nursing in the comfort of your own home can greatly enhance your treatment experience and ensure proper care.
  2. Do you offer infusion training? Proper infusion technique is essential for effective treatment. Ensure that the pharmacy provides comprehensive training to you and your caregivers.
  3. Do you provide complimentary incidental supplies? Items like comfy caps, cryo cuffs, bike helmets, joint braces, as well as everyday essentials like Tylenol and vitamins, can significantly improve your quality of life. It’s important to know if these are included in your treatment package.
  4. Do you offer a direct cell phone contact to my specialty pharmacy representative? Having direct access to a knowledgeable representative can streamline communication and address any concerns or questions you may have promptly.
  5. Do you ensure timely shipment of my medication? Timely delivery of your medication is critical to maintaining your treatment schedule and overall health. Make sure the pharmacy has reliable shipping practices in place.
  6. Do you provide infusion numbing cream and bandages? Comfort during and after infusion is essential. Ensure that the pharmacy supplies necessary items like numbing cream and bandages to alleviate discomfort and promote proper healing.
  7. Do you provide in-school treatment plans? Having a comprehensive treatment plan that extends to the school environment is essential for managing bleeding disorders effectively while ensuring continuity of care during school hours.
  8. Do you provide teacher and school nurse education?Educating teachers and school nurses about your condition and its management is crucial for creating a safe and supportive learning environment. It’s important to know if the pharmacy offers educational resources and training for school staff.
  9. Do you assist with individualized education programs and 504 plans? Individualized education programs (IEPs) and 504 plans are critical for ensuring that students with bleeding disorders receive the accommodations and support they need to thrive academically. Confirm whether the pharmacy can provide guidance and support in navigating these processes.
  10. Do you assist in advocating for my bleeding disorder? Advocacy plays a significant role in ensuring that individuals with bleeding disorders have access to quality care, treatment options, and support services. Determine if the pharmacy is willing to advocate on your behalf and support initiatives that benefit the bleeding disorder community.
  11. Do you provide support for the transition from pediatric care to adulthood? Transitioning from pediatric care to adult care can be challenging. It’s important to have support and resources in place to navigate this transition smoothly and ensure continuity of care as you move into adulthood.
  12. Do you support the Hemophilia Foundation of Maryland, my local patient advocacy foundation?

Supporting local patient advocacy organizations like the Hemophilia Foundation of Maryland is crucial for fostering a strong community and ensuring access to resources and support for individuals with bleeding disorders. Confirming whether the specialty pharmacy aligns with and actively supports HFM can indicate their commitment to the local bleeding disorder community and their dedication to providing holistic care beyond medication provision.

By asking these questions, you can ensure that the specialty pharmacy you choose is equipped to meet your specific needs and provide the level of care and support you deserve.
